A Look at a Marketing Career(1)
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), job opportunities in marketing are often the best for people who possess creativity and good communication skills along with a college degree. People who work in marketing may find employment opportunities in sales, promotions, marketing, public relations, and advertising.

From a Marketing Degree to the Workplace
Marketing employees may work with a company's promotions and advertising departments to promote the company's goods and/or services. They may be expected to build brand recognition and loyalty in an effort to create long-term market growth. Tasks performed by a marketing employee may also include the following:

  • Prepare graphics or written materials to promote a product or service
  • Create presentations to share with a client
  • Meet with customers to promote or sell a product
  • Prepare spreadsheets charting the purchasing trends of a consumer base
  • Travel to attend meetings with clients and other marketing employees
  • Identify demand for goods and services among a targeted group of consumers
  • Develop and implement market research strategies

What Does a Marketing Career Involve?
Marketing employees often make extensive use of computer technology, and computer skills are important in this job. The ability to navigate through the Internet as part of a viral marketing, promotion, or advertising strategy is becoming increasingly important as well. A marketing career may be particularly well-suited to those who are comfortable communicating with others. Many marketing jobs require excellent interpersonal skills--especially the power of persuasion.
